Magic School Bus Author and her Impact

The power of words go along way.

I thought this morning when I heard about Joana Cole, author of The Magic School Bus series, that my daughter Corrie is riding a magic school bus in the sky.

With everything else going on in the world from COVID-19 to Black Lives Matters movements and protests (all of which we need to pay attention to and educate ourselves), the death of a children’s author may seem like a small event.

Joana Cole’s creation made such an impact on the lives of my children. For me, she deserves to be remembered and honored. She wanted to attract students to school. She wanted them to learn through her stories.

The Magic School Bus is also a story I grew up with as a child.

When I heard the news, I thought of a line: She rides a magic school bus in the sky.

They say teacher turn over is high right now, and many teachers will leave the profession in five years or less. I will enter my seventh year as a full-time teacher, and my 12th year in education after I'd started as a sub and teacher assistant. I was the student in the 1990s you did not want in your classroom because I was diagnosed with ADHD and did not know how to socialize with other kids. I was due to be tested for autism, but this was considered an ostracizing experience for a child then, especially a girl. I am a third generation teacher and author of seventeen creative works.
