When you consider five-and-a-half years, a lot happens.
Children grow. The world sure has changed …
just as I have.
Five years ago, I barely knew anything about gardening. Our daughter, Corrie, wanted a garden at age five. After she graduated to heaven, my husband, John, said, “Let’s build a garden with a retaining wall that honors her memory.”
In those four years, I learned about zones, soil, different types of plants, and shade vs. sun. Last May, I started a small side hustle, Flowers by Co’Cha. The name combines our children’s names, as we have always started their names with C, and would with any other child. I have also grown to make sure that our living child, a son now 15, never feels left out or ignored. He is the “Cha” in Co’Cha.
Last winter, I began winter sowing with a plan for only our gardens. I was encouraged by a co-worker and a store manager at my favorite greenhouse to sell my bouquets.
This winter, I am getting a head start on all of the flowers, fillers, and herbs I want to grow because winter sowing worked well for me. I have a slightly larger greenhouse and a half-size one on the front porch. I have a half-size indoor greenhouse at my school. Below, I walk through what I do for winter sowing in the snow.
